Content Marketing: WideNet’s New Direction

This past May, the WideNet team packed up and made our annual trip to the Digital Summit in Atlanta, a two day conference that features experts from all over the marketing world sharing their knowledge and insights with the rest of us.

The event was an absolute blast, we learned a TON, and we even got to fangirl over Gary Vaynerchuk (sqeee!).

But despite all the great stuff we learned, the most valuable thing we took from Digital Summit wasn’t a new piece of information, but confirmation about something we’ve been feeling for a long time: Content marketing is the way of the future.

For now, at least.

What is Content Marketing and Why Is It Important?

Great question! We’ll let Google answer the first part:

“Content marketing is a strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly-defined audience — and, ultimately, to drive profitable customer action.”

Basically, create epic, actionable content—be it website content, blogs, videos, white papers, etc.—to attract consumers rather than beating them over the head with banner ads, pop ups, or those annoying commercials Spotify makes you sit though.

The main reason content is becoming such a big deal is because it gives people on the Internet (your audience) exactly what they want.

See, when you break it down, there are four primary reasons anyone uses the Internet:

  • Entertainment
  • Education
  • Communication
  • To make a purchase

Content, unlike any other form of digital marketing, can cover all four. That’s what makes it such a slam dunk for sales, brand awareness, and SEO.

Did We Mention SEO?

SEO has a history of being confusing and relatively hated. Luckily, after 40 billion changes to the algorithm, Google has made it so that creating great content is pretty much the only SEO strategy you need to pursue. And because of that, we, at WideNet, have collectively decided to start turning 90% of our marketing efforts (both for ourselves and our clients) towards content creation.

So what does this mean?

It means more blogging, more email, more videos, and more social media. We’re also going to be adjusting the way we approach website content creation.

We are ecstatic about this new approach, and we’ll be talking a lot more about it in the future (like in our next WideNet U class, for example).

We also want YOU, our readers, to help us out. We want to know what kind of content you’re interested in reading. So do us a favor, follow the link below for a quick survey, and tell us what you want to know. That way, we’ll be able to answer your specific questions about marketing, design, UX, and more.
